Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

Maintaining a healthy spine throughout your pregnancy is key to supporting you and your growing baby.  Pregnancy is such a dynamic time full of rapid physical, chemical, and hormonal changes that your body needs to maintain balance and alignment.  Chiropractic care can be quite helpful in maintaining that balance by ensuring your spine and pelvis are properly aligned and mobile, and thereby removing any interference on your nervous system.

Just because lower back pain is common during pregnancy doesn’t mean it is “normal” and that every mom has to suffer from it.  Chiropractic care is especially needed during pregnancy because as the baby grows, and the mother’s tummy and breasts enlarge, her centre of gravity changes and she starts to lean backwards.  This leaning puts extra pressure on the joints and nerves of the lower back.  Meanwhile, hormones are busy at work trying to relax the ligaments in the pelvis preparing them for stretching during childbirth.  When the extra weight and backwards lean is combined with a more flexible spine and pelvis, the result is that dreaded lower back pain that many women suffer during pregnancy.

Chiropractic care will release the stress on the spine and correct tiny misalignments with a chiropractic spinal adjustment.  This will also ease the strain and interference on the nervous system.  A healthy nervous system is extremely important for the pregnant woman who needs to have her body as healthy and strong as possible to nourish herself and her baby.

Chiropractic places special focus on the movement of the pelvis and hips.  Correct positioning of the pelvis will help prepare for a smooth passage for the baby. A balanced pelvis often helps to prevent sciatica and the sacroiliac joint pain/buttock pain that is common during pregnancy.

Modifications to the table or adjusting techniques are made during each stage of pregnancy.  These adaptations can make chiropractic adjustments for pregnancy moms easy and more comfortable.

In addition to spinal adjustments, your chiropractor will likely suggest simple at home exercises for the lower back, pelvis, neck, legs and pelvis floor muscles.   These exercises are crucial to facilitate delivery and to speed up your recovery time, helping you get back into shape after the birth.

Pregnancy is not meant to be a difficult time in a woman’s life.  Chiropractic care can help provide that foundation for the development of a healthy baby and mother and help to make this time the beautiful and wonderful experience it should be!

Pregnancy and Massage Therapy

Pregnancy is a time to celebrate life, both your own and the one you are about to bring into this world!  It is a time to nurture and nourish your body, to embrace the changes that are brought on by this wonderful experience.

Women can minimize the physical and emotional discomforts of pregnancy and childbirth, and improve the quality of this transformative time in their lives by receiving prenatal massages.

Some benefits might include:

  1. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts during pregnancy, such as lower back pain, sciatica, stiff neck and shoulders, leg cramps, swollen ankles, and sore feet.

  2. Massage helps to soothe and relax the nervous system, which can induce a deeper and more restful sleep.

  3. Massage increases local and general blood circulation, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both the mother and the fetus.  This can mean greater vitality and less fatigue for mom and better nourishment for her baby.

  4. Massage can relax tense muscles, which can allow for greater movement in the muscles, especially the pelvis which spreads to allow for the growing baby.

  5. Massage can be used during birth to make it easier and more comfortable for mom, and after the birth as well to help her regain her strength and ease postpartum stress.
